Dialectical Relationship of Concepts
The concept discussed here is rooted in the philosophical meaning of dialectics rather than its original linguistic sense as a method of argumentation. In its philosophical application, dialectics refers to the continuous process of change, interaction, and transformation among phenomena. Applying the dialectical perspective to conceptual systems reveals that human definitions of phenomena are also subject to constant transformation. Concepts emerge from specific historical, cultural, and intellectual conditions, and they respond to the requirements of a particular period of understanding. However, as the boundaries between the known and unknown continually shift, these definitions may require revision and reinterpretation. Therefore, conceptual development is not a process of reaching an absolute and final definition, but rather an ongoing search for more comprehensive and contextually appropriate understandings.
In the field of music, this perspective suggests that musical concepts should not be regarded as permanent categories with fixed meanings. The definitions of music, composition, form, material, and expression are shaped through continuous interactions between artistic practices, technological developments, cultural contexts, and changing modes of perception. Consequently, the meaning and function of musical concepts may transform as new artistic conditions emerge. The dialectical relationship of concepts provides a theoretical framework for understanding music as an evolving phenomenon rather than a static system defined by predetermined boundaries.
Therefore, creative processes in music can be understood as continuous negotiations between opposing or complementary elements: tradition and innovation, limitation and possibility, structure and expression, or existing knowledge and unexplored possibilities. The value of conceptual exploration lies precisely in this continuous movement toward new interpretations. Thus, the search for alternative understandings of previously established concepts becomes an essential part of artistic development, allowing musical practices to expand beyond existing definitions and reveal new possibilities of expression.
Performance Possibilities (Instrument–Performer–Environment)
Musical composition does not emerge in isolation from its conditions of realization. Every composition is shaped not only by artistic intention but also by the practical circumstances under which it is expected to be performed, recorded, or disseminated. In this perspective, performance conditions become an integral part of compositional thinking rather than merely external limitations. They include three interconnected dimensions: the instrument, the performer, and the surrounding environment in which musical production takes place.
While twentieth- and twenty-first-century composition has greatly expanded the technical possibilities of instruments and performance practices, these possibilities are never experienced equally across different cultural and geographical contexts. The availability of performers, rehearsal opportunities, recording facilities, technological resources, institutional support, and performance venues fundamentally influences the range of compositional decisions available to a composer. Consequently, compositional technique cannot be understood independently from its performance ecology.
This perspective has significantly informed my works. Rather than regarding practical constraints as obstacles, my compositional approach treats them as creative variables that shape musical language. In the context of contemporary Iran, where access to specialized performers, rehearsal time, and the performance of large-scale contemporary works has often been limited, some compositions have intentionally adopted alternative realizations. Computer-generated sound, sampling technologies, and software environments such as Pure Data became practical means of preserving compositional ideas that would otherwise remain unrealized. In other works, musical materials were deliberately adapted to the available performance resources, allowing the compositions to remain performable within existing conditions rather than depending upon ideal circumstances.
This approach does not argue that technological realization is aesthetically superior to live performance. Instead, it proposes that every musical work exists within a specific network of performance possibilities and limitations. The composer's task is therefore not only to imagine musical structures but also to understand the practical environment in which those structures can become audible. From this perspective, compositional decisions emerge through a dialogue between artistic imagination and performance reality. This framework recognizes that instruments, performers, technologies, and local cultural circumstances actively participate in the formation of musical ideas. Performance conditions therefore become productive forces capable of generating new artistic solutions.
The Concept of Idea in Musical Composition
In a broad perspective, the concept of an idea in music can be understood in relation to the notions of subject and theme, since all three concepts share a fundamental characteristic: the expression of identity. An artist attempts to reveal the existence of something that possesses particular characteristics in his or her perception. This element, which may appear as a theme in classical sonata form, a subject in fugue, or an idea in contemporary music, is distinguished by specific features through which it acquires its identity. Therefore, an idea is not merely a musical fragment but a recognizable entity whose identity allows it to function as the foundation of a compositional process.
Throughout the history of Western music, the manifestation of musical identity was often associated with melodic and motivic structures. In many traditional approaches to composition, the terms thematic and melodic were closely connected because melody was considered the primary carrier of musical identity. However, the expansion of musical language in the twentieth and twenty-first centuries transformed this understanding. Contemporary composers increasingly recognize that any sonic material can acquire identity and become an idea, whether it is a rhythm, a timbral quality, a harmonic relationship, a spatial organization, a texture, or even a process of sound production.
One of the essential aspects of understanding an idea is the manner in which a composer develops an entire musical structure from it. In its most concentrated form, a single idea can provide the foundation for the construction of an entire composition. Minimalism demonstrates this approach through its emphasis on reduction, repetition, and gradual transformation of limited musical materials. Composers such as Philip Glass show how a relatively simple musical idea can generate complex formal processes through continuous development and subtle transformation. In such works, the listener can perceive the evolution of the musical material and follow the relationship between the original idea and its later manifestations.
The significance of the idea in contemporary composition also lies in the awareness of the composer toward the potential of musical materials. A composer who recognizes the identity and possibilities of an idea can transform even a simple element into a meaningful structural principle. Furthermore, the concept of idea in contemporary music extends beyond the creation of particular sounds and may include the processes through which sounds emerge. The exploration of new instrumental techniques, unconventional performance methods, and alternative relationships between performer and instrument demonstrates that the process of producing sound itself can become an idea. From this perspective, the role of the composer is not merely to accumulate various musical elements but to discover, preserve, and transform the identity of selected materials throughout the compositional process.
Analog and Digital as Musical Material Conditions
The digital refers to a structure composed of discrete, classifiable, and numerical units, in which elements can be distinguished through clear boundaries. In contrast, the analog represents a continuous structure in which transitions between elements are gradual rather than separated by fixed divisions. A significant aspect of the distinction between them is the role of binary oppositions in the formation of meaning. Digital structures tend to operate through clearly defined contrasts, where elements are placed within recognizable categories and the possibilities between or beyond these categories are often limited. Language provides an example of such a system, as many concepts are organized through oppositional relationships such as good and bad, or consonance and dissonance. Analog structures, however, allow for intermediate states and gradual transitions that cannot always be reduced to fixed categories. Similar to the continuous spectrum of colors, where countless variations exist between two neighboring colors, analog systems contain possibilities that exceed established classifications.
In the field of music, this distinction can be observed in different approaches to musical organization. Systems based on tonality and clear pitch hierarchies can be understood as closer to digital structures because they rely on defined relationships, categories, and rules governing the selection and organization of musical elements. Scales, harmonic functions, and conventional relationships between consonance and dissonance establish recognizable boundaries within the musical material. In contrast, experimental and avant-garde musical practices often explore analog characteristics by expanding the field of sound possibilities beyond fixed categories. In such approaches, timbre, noise, texture, and subtle variations of sound may function as musical materials without necessarily belonging to clearly defined oppositional structures.
However, the openness of analog systems does not necessarily lead to easier communication. Although analog structures resemble the continuous complexity of natural phenomena, human understanding has historically depended on classification and separation through systems such as language that simplifies reality by dividing continuous experiences into recognizable categories, allowing humans to communicate and interpret phenomena more efficiently. As a result, analog musical environments may possess a quality of meaning beyond immediate categorization; they are not meaningless, but they can be more resistant to rapid interpretation because they operate outside familiar systems of classification.
From this perspective, the relationship between analog and digital represents two different strategies of organizing musical experience rather than a simple opposition between old and new. Digital systems provide clarity, structure, and recognizable relationships, while analog systems open possibilities for ambiguity, continuity, and unexplored sonic dimensions. The development of contemporary music can therefore be understood as a continuous negotiation between these two conditions: the desire for precise organization and the search for new forms of expression beyond established boundaries.
The concept of modernism is fundamentally connected to the present and to the continuous search for what belongs to the current moment. In its broader historical meaning, modernity refers to a set of social, intellectual, and cultural transformations. In music, modernism has often been associated with the expansion of previous limitations and the search for new possibilities of expression. However, the idea of novelty cannot be reduced merely to the introduction of unfamiliar materials. A genuinely new approach emerges through the creation of new relationships among existing elements. Therefore, innovation is not necessarily achieved by abandoning the past, but by discovering unexplored potentials within musical concepts, materials, and structures. This perspective connects modernism with the broader understanding of musical development as a continuous transformation of definitions and possibilities.
In the context of Iranian culture, the term modernism is commonly represented by the concept of No-garāyi (novelty-seeking), emphasizing the desire for what is new and more closely connected to the present. However, a superficial interpretation of modernism may reduce novelty to the use of recently developed techniques or materials within a specific geographical context. Such an approach may overlook the broader dimension of modernity, in which a new idea gains significance through the creation of original relationships rather than simply through its local difference. Being modern requires a deeper reconsideration of musical language rather than merely adopting external signs of contemporaneity.
Postmodernism can be understood as a continuation and reconsideration of the questions raised by modernism. Rather than defining progress as the complete rejection of the past, postmodern thought emphasizes transformation, reinterpretation, and the possibility of discovering new meanings within previous materials. In this sense, time is not understood as a simple linear movement from past to future; instead, earlier ideas and historical materials may return within new contexts and acquire different identities. In music, this approach can be observed in works that reinterpret previous styles, techniques, and references through new structural relationships, demonstrating that innovation can emerge through dialogue between different historical layers.
From this perspective, both modernism and postmodernism provide a framework for understanding contemporary composition as a process of redefining possibilities. The essential question is not whether a musical work uses completely new materials, but whether it establishes new relationships among musical elements. This understanding creates a theoretical foundation for approaches such as Permanent Enharmonic, in which an existing harmonic principle is transformed into a continuous compositional process and reveals new possibilities within a familiar musical language.
Permanent Enharmonic
It is one of my compositional concepts developed as an extension of a broader approach toward the transformation of musical concepts and materials. Based on the idea that musical elements are not fixed entities but evolving relationships, this concept considers enharmonic reinterpretation not merely as a theoretical possibility or a notational technique, but as a continuous compositional process. In conventional harmonic practice, enharmonic equivalence is generally used as a means for modulation, simplification of notation, or reinterpretation of a particular harmonic event. Permanent Enharmonic proposes that this relationship can become a permanent structural condition through which the harmonic development of an entire composition is shaped.
Throughout the history of Western music, harmony has continuously expanded through changes in the understanding of tonal relationships and musical materials. The twentieth and twenty-first centuries introduced various approaches, including extended tonality, modal systems, chromatic organization, serial techniques, spectral approaches, and electronic or algorithmic methods. These developments demonstrate that harmonic thinking is not a fixed system but a field capable of continuous transformation. Permanent Enharmonic follows this historical process by exploring the possibility of extending tonal relationships from within, allowing enharmonic reinterpretation to become a generative force rather than a temporary harmonic device.
Within this framework, pitches, intervals, and chords are understood through their potential for changing identity. A harmonic element does not necessarily possess a single permanent function; instead, its role may gradually transform through continuous reinterpretation. Similar to the broader concept of changing musical identities, where a material gains new meanings through different contexts, enharmonic relations create a dynamic network in which harmonic functions emerge, shift, and redefine themselves. Consequently, harmonic movement is perceived not as a sequence of separate tonal events, but as a continuous process of transformation.
This approach is also connected to the broader understanding of musical material as a field of possibilities. Just as contemporary composition has expanded instrumental techniques, timbral resources, and the definition of musical ideas, Permanent Enharmonic expands the potential of harmonic material by revealing possibilities hidden within existing tonal relationships. It does not reject tonal harmony or replace previous harmonic systems; rather, it investigates how a traditional musical language can continue to evolve through a reinterpretation of its internal resources. In this sense, Permanent Enharmonic represents an attempt to reconsider the identity and flexibility of harmonic structures. It proposes a model of harmonic continuity in which change itself becomes the organizing element of musical structure.
Controlled Random Event and Laptop Orchestra
The concept of Controlled Random Event can be understood as a fundamental approach in the context of electronic music practices, particularly within the framework of a Laptop Orchestra. In this approach, randomness is not considered as an uncontrolled or accidental process, but as an organized element within a predefined musical environment. The composer designs the conditions, limitations, and relationships between different sound processes, while allowing unpredictable events to emerge during the performance. Therefore, the role of the composer shifts from creating every single musical detail toward designing a system in which sound events can develop through controlled possibilities.
In a Laptop Orchestra environment, each performer’s laptop can function as an independent sound-generating unit while simultaneously participating in a larger network of interactions. Through software environments such as Pure Data, performers are able to create patches that define specific rules for sound transformation, interaction, and variation. The resulting musical structure is not necessarily fixed before the performance; rather, it emerges through the continuous interaction between the designed system, the performer, and the generated sonic events. Controlled Random Event in this context provides a balance between compositional intention and technological autonomy. The composer establishes the framework of the system, determines the possible range of sonic behaviors, and shapes the relationships between different processes.
The idea of a Laptop Orchestra based on Controlled Random Events also reflects a different understanding of collective music-making. Instead of a traditional orchestra in which performers mainly reproduce a previously composed score, each participant becomes an active element within a distributed electronic system. The musical result emerges from the interaction among individual patches, performers, and the overall structure of the performance. Such a model creates a dynamic relationship between control and openness, where technology serves as a medium for exploring new forms of musical organization.
